Financial Aid

In America the Federal government, state governments and other organizations provide financial aid to students. The US Federal government has certain grants programs which provide financial aid for students who are seeking higher education. The Federal government aid programs are; Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), Academic Competitiveness Grant, The National Science & Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (National SMART Grant) and Institutional Grants. The Pell Grant is awarded to students depending on their financial needs to put them through college and currently (July 2007 to June 2008) the maximum amount of grant that a student can get is $ 4,310. Both full-time and part-time students can get this grant and the grant is based on a student’s financial position. The schools can award Pell Grant to a student and pay the amount to the student. FSEOG is for undergraduate students with extreme financial needs. If a student is eligible the schools will give the grant directly to the student. An academic competitive grant is given to eligible students and is awarded in addition to the Pell Grant and was started in 2005. To receive this grant a student must maintain a GPA of at least 3.0 and there are certain other requirements that a student has to meet to get this grant. The National SMART grant is awarded to students who are in their third or fourth year of graduation studies. This grant is only awarded in certain disciplines and is given in addition to the Pell Grant. There are other institutional grants that are awarded by the institutions based on a student’s financial position and academic performance.

In addition to the Federal Government Financial Grants that are given to deserving students there are several other financial aid programs that are given to students. These student financial aid programs are given by certain state governments and by other private sources. These financial aid programs are; free scholarship lotteries, college based and student profile based aid, aid for graduate and professional schools, aid for elementary schools, aid for special activities and other innovative programs. On the Internet there are several sites that are giving scholarship lotteries to attract more traffic to their web sites. Participants of community volunteer work can also get financial aid and children of military veterans or students interested in pursuing a military career can also get financial aid from the military. Most colleges have a financial office and a student can get aid from them. There are several other student financial aid programs which are provided by various community based programs or by private organizations. There are some organizations that pay for a student’s education and on completetion of their education they hire them. There are also financial aid programs that are available for children with disabilities, for children who are suffering from cancer or any other disease. There are student financial aid programs for foreign students.

Student financial aid programs come from many sources and are available for a number of reasons. If a child or parents require financial aid to get their children educated there are special financial aid programs which offer student financial aid. There are also philanthropist societies that give student financial aid.

A deserving student in America can seek financial aid from a number of governments sponsored and non government aid giving institutions and societies. All financial aid programs are designed to encourage deserving students to be able to complete their studies and not drop out of school or college due to financial constraints. A student is not limited to only seeking and getting a single financial aid grant but can apply for several of them. Most grants are not repayable and there are only certain student financial aid programs that expect the student to do some work for them.
