Applications cannot be submitted before January and students who want to apply should download or get the form in December and complete all the required paperwork and be ready to submit it in January. No applications are entertained that are submitted before January 1st of any year.

The student applying for FAFSA needs to submit the following information:
Marital status, Education history, Expected course workload, Income taxes & deductions (including spouse's), Assets, Household, Citizenship & state residency, Major course of study, Interest in student loans & work study, Spouse's income, Dependency status, List of schools the student is interested in attending.

Each year the federal government randomly selects 30% of the applications that are received for verification. Students who are selected for verification will receive this notification within 10 to 14 days after they receive their Student aid Report. Students may be selected for verification due to inconsistencies in their original applications or on a random basis. Should a student receive a verification request they should go over it carefully and then fill it out and submit the verification form. The federal government does confirm certain data with other government agencies like for social security number and tax information.

The student should read all the requirements of the official fafsa application form and then once they have all the relevant information they should then submit the application. The fafsa online application should be entered and submitted during January of the year in which the student plans to take admission. Most students who apply fill out a fafsa application online as this is faster and should request a fafsa application pin number which the student needs to save for future reference. If a student or parent has a pin number they can track the status of their fafsa application with the federal government education department. Parents and children cannot share the same pin number.

If any required information on the fafsa application form is missing one should try and get it but no extra information should be given in the fafsa application. Only the relevant information is required. If a student’s parents are divorced then the parent with who the child has lived for the last 12 months should be submitted. The name of at least 6 schools in which the student is applying for admission should be submitted. A student should not submit more then one application as the education department will only process the first form that they receive and even if a student is applying for admission in more then one school only one application is required. Should a student not receive an email or postal mail response within 14 business days the student can call up the fafsa toll free number and check the status of the application? The fafsa online application home page should be used to take out a printable fafsa application or fill out a fafsa application online. An applicant can take printouts of fafsa applications and study them and use the fafsa on the web free application to get all the information that is required.

Remember to submit the fafsa application in January and not before as any application that is submitted before January of that calendar year will not be entertained.
